The Malaquite Campground at the Padre Island National Seashore is open year-round, and while it doesn’t offer on-the-beach sites, there are plenty of oceanside sites. With an average of 70 miles of undeveloped beaches and untouched nature, the Malaquite Campground is a good choice for van lifers. This park is located just outside Corpus Christi at the very end of Park Road 22. The National Seashore is located in the island’s northern part, at the opposite end of the barrier island that is Padre Island. They are spaced out more than 100 miles apart. Padre Island National Seashoreįirst, to clarify, this location is different from South Padre Island. The nightly cost of camping here is $10, plus a daily entrance fee. Depending on how far down the strip of beach you set up, restrooms could be as close as 50 yards or a mile and a half away. There is a beach bathhouse and bathrooms located nearby the headquarters. Be steps from the Gulf of Mexico when you set up camp in a part of the 1.5-mile stretch of undesignated beach sites. In addition to the above-listed water activities, there are on-the-beach campsites for vans and RVs. Of course, if you don’t want to drive to this state park from the KOA Journey, you could opt to park and stay in the state park instead.
